MATT RYDER
Matt Ryder is a British painter based in Dubai, whose work explores landscape through the lens of movement, distance, and belonging.
Raised in England and living in the Middle East for nearly two decades, Ryder has built his practice between worlds. His paintings are grounded in direct observation, often started outdoors in the deserts and mountains of the UAE, but have increasingly expanded into the American Southwest, where he spends extended periods painting and teaching in Arizona and Utah.
There is a sense of pursuit in his work. Not just of landscape, but of something harder to define, light at its most fleeting, atmosphere at its most fragile, and places that feel both familiar and completely unknown.
Painting primarily in oils, Ryder works from life wherever possible, creating small plein air studies that act as anchors for larger studio paintings. This process allows him to carry the immediacy of the moment into more resolved work, balancing structure with instinct.
Largely self-taught, he has developed a style rooted in value, restraint, and the physical language of paint. His influences draw from both historical and contemporary landscape traditions, but his work is ultimately shaped by experience and by time spent in the field, in difficult conditions, returning to the same places again and again.
Ryder has exhibited and taught internationally and is represented in the United States, where he continues to develop his presence within the Western art world.
